The series
Brasswick is a cold river city kept alive by the Deep Furnace under the Assay House, and the furnace is fed with made works. Sworn makers bind a working into glass, steel, ink, cloth and bronze, and every working spends one of their senses: taste for a day, sight until the thaw.
This winter the furnace is failing and the Assay is hiding the figures. Each book follows one maker and the person sent to watch, guard, marry, rob or record her, and each ends with its couple together. The fifth book closes the winter, brings the earlier couples back and resolves the furnace.
